It finally came, whispered through and it's done. The Palm Pre launch hit with a little pop noise in the dark. No big lines, no real numbers to talk about for the most part. The reviewers have been busy ringing out their reviews and despite all the attempts to mask any real failure of the the Palm pre some did reach those who were willing to talk about them despite all the venom spit at all those who dared to say anything but good things about the unit. It almost got a little funny when you read the reviews from people at CNET, Wall Street journal , and Washington post put out their reviews with all stating the same thing about the unit, saying that the unit was a very good attempt that was hurt with the simple issues like battery life, and bad keyboard and slow app launching that scared the overall rating for this unit, but yet when addressed on video or pod-cast none of those thing seem to be the same issue it was( or better yet disappeared from the conversation) when they wrote their review. Either these issues exist or they don't, right? Don't get scared of people's reactions as long as your review is based on facts and not based on personal hatred for a concept or company. I mean come on, it doesn't look thus far that most people weren't fooled into drinking this "IPHONEKILLER" cool-aid concept for this phone. I think the world has seen this before and they are starting to get it finally. There is just not going to be a phone that can do this and the best thing for the industry and cell phone makers to do is put this name to rest. It's really starting to become a fool's term used only by anti iphone haters because no real reviewer takes this term serious anymore.
So when all the smoke and hype is cleared what do you really have here. The time I have spent with the phone shows me a very beautiful phone. The screen resolutions for some reason just pops like a high end LED or LcD tv. At time the screen was so vivid and beautiful it looks like a sticker of a picture that was laid on top of the screen. It for the most part looks better than the Iphone screen and moves more fluid than it too. Now I can't understand why other than the fact that the screen is smaller and more compact therefore given the illusion or a better screen perhaps. No take in mind this is just my opinion because I have heard others say the opposite, that the screen comes in second place to the iphone. The whole multi-task thing works great and is going to definitely be a game changer when it comes down to that concept for future phones to try and out do or at least duplicate in someway. Now I think the whole snergy thing will only apply or help only a small amount of people. For the most part I myself have people on facebook that I keep track of because they know the people I really consider my friends and I could care less to have them in my contacts or know their birthdays and emails. It's a good attempt to add something different but it's just not a concept that everyone will welcome or need to have. This leads to the internet speed. I am so glad this was not one of those instinct moments for sprint. Where sprint's download time was good but the phone rendering was bad. This time around the rendering is on par with the iphone's and this is saying something there. Some people state it was faster but I didn't see it as faster where I lived but if it's the same as the iphone that is amazing enough. And last but not least is the fact that this item is coming out on sprint with a it's low cost per month is always a welcome for anyone buying a cell phone they want. I have always stated that if I had my choice of plans I would use sprint's plan rates and their whole 7pm nights thing for the lower plans was genius.
And now we have the real issues that hurt the phone's chances at true staying power. #1 is battery life. I don't know how many times cell phone companies have to make this same mistake over and over again. Don't tell me it's because it's 3g because it's not. Sprint placed a 1180mah battery ( the same battery in the g1) that was already proven to be a lack luster power life of a battery with other phones into the Pre. You could have easily gone with a 1450mah battery that would have given it a better stand by time and overall use time. So why? There is no excuse! Next issue is the keyboard. Oh my God, what the hell were you guys thinking? There is no way you can't type using your actual finger tips without hitting two buttons at the same time. The only way to type on this thing is to use your fingernails instead. If you use your fingernails the overall speed and quality of your typing will raise dramatically, but this isn't a options that everyone has. Now this wouldn't have been as bad if you(sprint and palm) weren't so busy trying to brag about your physical keyboard over the iphones digital one. You remind me of the G1 which spent the first 3 months trying to do the same thing only to turn around after 5 months and put on the very thing they talked bad about ( a digital keyboard) on their phone. And this outcome would not shock me if they did do the same thing later in the life of the Pre. And lastly is the apps. The Pre has a app store or should I has booth because I would classify that as a store. And entering a market with a giant that has over 50,000 amps and 1 billion downloads that has taken place in over 60 country's with a phone that is available in over 80 country worldwide with your phone being only able to be sold in the US ( as we speak right now) doesn't paint a successful road ahead for you. Let's just be honest here, no one phone has accomplished what the iphone has period at anytime so to think that the Pre will do something like that or even come close is not realistic or fair. So for those ( there are more but these are the major ones) reason I really feel that we are looking at a great runner up but thats all it will be and after about 6 months from now this phone will just be yet another attempt that failed to take down the IPHONE and the public focus will be on the next phone and will have forgotten about this phone as they did with the instinct, the dare, and the blackberry storm.
